Festival

Ebb & Flow is an arts programme and festival, run by Sun Pier House CIC and Intra Arts. The festival took place in May 2021, as part of Estuary 2021. We're now planning our ideas for the next Ebb & Flow festival.

Get Involved

For Ebb & Flow we speak to local people about the area and record their stories and reminiscences. We work with local historians and archives to research hidden histories, and imagine what the area's future might be.

Please get in touch if you have connections with the area and a story to tell, big or small, or photographs you'd like to share.

Arts Trails

Over 25 local artists developed and created a wide range of artworks for the festival, with art installations, public performances and workshop activities - all to spark interest in the rich history and fascinating stories of Chatham Intra.

Festival visitors explored the arts trails along the high street and on Sun Pier. There's a downloadable map on the trails page.
Ebb & Flow 2021 - an 8 minute film capturing the arts trail and activities of the festival.

Pop Up Museum

An intriguing pop up micro museum exhibition with the theme 'Work hard. Play hard' was on show April - May 2021, celebrating the history of the working river, wharfs and boatyards, pubs, theatres and communities of Chatham Intra.
This Ebb & Flow commission by Robert Flood and Kevin Younger was visible 24 hours a day in the street-facing windows gallery at INTRA, 337-341 High Street Rochester, ME1 1DA.

Shadow Tales

MESS ROOM and Wendy Daws took photos and collected shadows to create a colourful ‘Gallery of You’ with decorative street banners as part of the Ebb & Flow Festival.
Local residents and business owners struck poses and their silhouettes adorned art banners on display during the festival. Thanks to everyone who took part, we hope you enjoyed seeing your shadows in the street and guessing who all the other people were.

Through The Porthole

Natasha Steer worked with local people to decorate porthole shapes that brightened up the street and celebrated river and local heritage during the festival. Using scraps of sticker vinyl, paint and other embellishments on a sturdy round porthole shape, people created views of historic ships, swans, Medway Pride, local landmarks and river creatures. They made up part of our High Street Exhibition art trail.
