Arts Trails

Our arts trails are arranged like a treasure hunt, look out for the themed trails below, and see what Ebb & Flow goodies you can pick up from shops and venues along the way while discovering the hidden histories.

The map shows where the artworks and activities are located, but you'll have to look around to see exactly where they are. Lots of businesses on the street are joining in, and we've taken over windows, the pavement, railings and virtual space, along this mile of high street.

Map

We're giving out a printed map of the arts trails, here's a pdf version.

Shadow Tales of Intra

In windows of shops and other buildings along the Old High Street Intra, shadowy historical characters have appeared, inviting you to find out their links to these places.

The High Street Exhibition

A mile-long gallery of artworks in the windows of the High Street.
Artists & Curators: Wendy Daws, Robert Flood and Kevin Younger, David Frankum, Neil Thorne, Natasha Steer, Laura Fisher, Rikard Österlund, Jatin Patel, Deadman's Island, and Hannah Whittaker, along with artworks created with and by local people.

Live Art & Activities

Interactive experiences and pop-up performances are dotted along the street over the festival weekend. Hear sound art reverberating in a tunnel, find the secret ampitheatre, watch the magical process of Victorian-style wet plate photography, help to direct a 'seance of sounds', collaborate on a giant printed barge pennant, make a cut out character, see the sailing barge Edith May at Sun Pier, get caught up in a flash mob dance, and see a take on gender identity by revisiting a musichall act from the 1920s. And after dark, see the windows of Chatham House light up with projections.

Then & Now

During the Victorian Era, the Chatham Intra area had many photographic studios. Discover their locations and why they were there, learn who the photographers were and see some of their photos.

Rain Art

Hidden in the pavements of the area, illustrations make themsleves visible when the rain (or a spray bottle) makes them wet. Can you find William Cuffay, or antique cameras, the last remaining stone of the Empire Theatre, a sailing barge, or Medway band Thee Milkshakes?
